The Japanese members of Exonemo are a legend on the international internet art scene. Following countless irreverent projects in all kinds of formats – from apps on the Web to painting on LED screens – they founded a new type of event six years ago, the Yami-Ichi, a flea market that brings together internet materials and gives them a physical presence in online culture. A bazaar of ‘internet things’, all kinds of material, icons and symbols, laid out higgledy-piggledy on stalls without any kind of hierarchy.
The artistic unit Exonemo, consisting of Sembo Kensuke and Akaiwa Yae, was set up on the internet in 1996. Their project The Road Movie won the prestigious Prix Ars Electronica in 2006. They live and work in New York.
